Marissa is a modern elaboration of Maris, a Latin title for the Virgin Mary (Stella Maris, or Star of the Sea). It is also frequently associated as a variant of Maria or Melissa. The name gained significant popularity in the United States during the late 20th century before becoming a rare choice today.
