Marcellina is a feminine diminutive form of Marcellus, which itself is a diminutive of Marcus. It ultimately derives from the Roman god of war, Mars, suggesting a sense of strength and protection. Historically, it was borne by Saint Marcellina, the elder sister of Saint Ambrose.
