Greatest or son of
Mak is often used as a shortened form of names beginning with 'Mac' or 'Mc', meaning 'son of' in Gaelic. It can also be a diminutive of the Latin name Maximus, meaning 'greatest'. In some Slavic contexts, it is the word for 'poppy'.
