In Japanese, Mai typically means 'dance' or 'linen' depending on the kanji used. In Vietnamese, it often refers to the 'golden apricot blossom' associated with the Lunar New Year. It also has roots in Arabic meaning 'water' and in some Native American traditions meaning 'coyote'.
