Flax or lime tree; also a diminutive of Linda
Linnie originated as a diminutive for names ending in -lina or -line, such as Melinda or Caroline, and later became associated with the Germanic 'Linda' meaning soft or tender. It is also linked to the Swedish botanist Carl Linnaeus, whose surname refers to the linden (lime) tree. Popular in the late 19th century, it now carries a sweet, antique charm.
