Kelven is a rare variant of Kelvin, which likely originated from the River Kelvin in Scotland. The name of the river itself is thought to derive from Middle Gaelic, meaning 'narrow water' or 'wooded river'. It is also sometimes associated with the Germanic name Kelvin, meaning 'friend of ships'.
