Kamaia is often interpreted as a modern elaboration of the Hawaiian name Kama, meaning 'the child'. It is also frequently associated with the Hawaiian word pua, meaning 'flower', or seen as a creative variant of the name Amaya. In some contexts, it is used as a phonetic variation of the Sanskrit name Kamaya, meaning 'beloved'.
