Jonie is a diminutive form of Joan or Joanna, which ultimately derives from the Hebrew name Yochanan. It conveys the idea that the divine has shown favor or grace. While it gained some visibility in the mid-20th century, it remains a rare alternative to the more common Joni or Joan.
