A rare compound name combining the Hebrew John, meaning 'God is gracious,' and the Latin Mark, meaning 'warlike' or 'dedicated to Mars.' In the New Testament, John Mark was a companion of Paul and Barnabas and is traditionally identified as the author of the Gospel of Mark.
