From the ancient region of Illyria
Derived from the name of an ancient region in the western Balkans, the etymology is debated but may relate to the Illyrii tribe. In literature, it is famously used by Shakespeare as the setting for his play Twelfth Night, giving it a romantic and theatrical pedigree.
