Hay valley or hedged enclosure
A variant of the English surname Hayden, derived from Old English words 'heg' (hay) and 'denu' (valley), or 'hege' (hedge) and 'dun' (hill). It originally described someone living near a hay field or a protected valley. While less common than the 'a' spelling, it retains the same pastoral English roots.
