From the hedge or enclosed field
Derived from the Middle English word 'hege', it originally denoted someone who lived near a hedge or an enclosure. In an Armenian context, it is a variant of Hayk, the legendary patriarch and founder of the Armenian nation. It carries a sense of heritage and historical strength.
