The name is derived from the Japanese characters 'Go' meaning perceive or aware, and 'Ku' meaning sky or emptiness. It is famously associated with the protagonist of the Dragon Ball franchise, whose name is a Japanese translation of Sun Wukong from the Chinese classic Journey to the West.
