Young goat or shield
Derived from the Greek word 'aigidion', meaning 'young goat', it later became associated with the Latin 'aegis', referring to a protective shield. The name gained popularity in the Middle Ages due to Saint Giles, a hermit who became the patron saint of cripples and lepers.
