Geraldine is the feminine form of Gerald, a Germanic name composed of the elements 'ger' (spear) and 'wald' (rule). It was famously used by the 16th-century poet Henry Howard, Earl of Surrey, to address Lady Elizabeth Fitzgerald, known as 'The Fair Geraldine.'
