Derived from the Middle English word 'femele', which stems from the Old French 'femelle' and ultimately the Latin 'femella', the diminutive of 'femina'. While historically used as a biological descriptor, it is extremely rare as a given name in the United States and is often the result of clerical errors on birth certificates where the sex was recorded in the name field.
