Colan has two primary etymological paths. In Irish and Scottish Gaelic, it is a variant of Colin, derived from 'cailean' meaning 'whelp' or 'young dog'. Alternatively, it serves as a medieval diminutive of Nicholas, a Greek name meaning 'victory of the people'.
