A modern phonetic spelling variant of the Gaelic name Bodhi or the English surname Bowdie. It is often associated with the Sanskrit 'Bodhi' meaning enlightenment, or the Scottish 'Bowie' meaning blond or yellow-haired. In some contexts, it is viewed as a diminutive of the Scandinavian name Boden.
