House of figs or house of affliction
Derived from a New Testament place name, Bethany was a village near Jerusalem where Jesus stayed during the week before his crucifixion. It is traditionally interpreted as meaning 'house of figs' or 'house of affliction' in Hebrew. The name became popular among English speakers in the mid-20th century.
