Derived from the Spanish word for the Ascension of Jesus into heaven. It is traditionally given to children born on the Feast of the Ascension in the Catholic liturgical calendar. While more common as a feminine name in historical Spanish contexts, it is used as a masculine name in some Latin American traditions.
