Unknown; possibly a variation of Harriet meaning home ruler
The name was coined by British author Mary Norton for the protagonist of her 1952 novel 'The Borrowers'. It is widely considered a diminutive or creative variation of Harriet, which is of Germanic origin meaning ruler of the home.
