In Arabic, Alem (typically transliterated as 'Alim' or 'Alam' depending on the specific root) refers to the world or the universe. It can also carry the connotation of a sign or a mark, often associated with knowledge and wisdom in various Islamic contexts. In some East African cultures, particularly Ethiopia, it is used as a name meaning 'world'.
